Tony realised he also had to invest in his education so he picked up the book “Where the Wild Things Are” by Maurice Sendak, and sat down to read it. He became engrossed in it, realising the story pertained very much to him.

In the fast-paced world of construction, company owners often find themselves stuck in a cycle of low profit margins and long hours in the office. Achieving significant profit growth and a healthier work-life balance can feel like an insurmountable challenge.

This rocked Tony, as he realised that he was looking in the mirror as he read the book.

However, he realised as he read that “Where the Wild Things Are” provides timeless lessons that can inspire construction business owners to embrace change and growth. These are the lessons Tony was willing to embrace. The story of Max, a young boy who sails to an island of Wild Things and eventually returns home transformed, offers valuable insights for business owners. It’s a tale of exploration, self-discovery, and the importance of balance between work and personal life. Embrace the Adventure Max’s journey to the land of the Wild Things symbolizes the leap into the unknown that business owners must often take. Embracing new challenges and stepping out of one’s comfort zone can lead to significant growth and new opportunities.

Tony realised that by taking on a mentor, he had stepped way outside of his comfort zone. It was an opportunity he was willing to take. Leadership and Influence As Max becomes the king of the Wild Things, he learns about leadership and influence.

For construction company owners, effective leadership means inspiring and empowering their teams to operate efficiently and independently.

For Tony he realised from his readings that he had a dysfunctional team. This he needed to fix with the help of his coach/mentor. Facing Challenges Max faces numerous challenges with the Wild Things, much like the obstacles in the construction industry. The story teaches us about resilience and the importance of facing challenges head-on rather than avoiding them.

Tony reflected on the many challenges he had had in his business so far, and the goals he had set in place to drive the business forward. It seemed such a huge leap to achieve. Importance of Balance Max eventually decides to leave the Wild Things and return home, realizing the importance of balance.

Similarly, construction business owners must find a balance between work and personal life to avoid burnout and maintain long-term success. Vision and Goal Setting Max’s clear goal of returning home keeps him focused throughout his journey.

Construction company owners, like Tony should set clear, achievable goals for profit growth and work-life balance to stay motivated and driven. Tony had done this already before reading the book, so we went back and checks his goals were still relevant. Power of Imagination The story highlights the power of imagination and creativity. For business owners, thinking creatively about new solutions, processes, and innovations can lead to increased efficiency and profitability.
