ENERGY & LEADERSHIP
Energy requirements are integral to our human needs. We need energy for warmth, powering our modes of transport, and to fuel our bodies to work.
More wars have been fought over the requirement for energy than possibly any other subject, except for possibly religion.
Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait to get to its oil reserves due to the 8 year attritional war with Iran that depleted his resources. The current war where Russia invaded Ukraine is about energy. Ukraine has some of the largest reserves of coal in the world, and has 117 of the 120 most important metals and minerals.
In his excellent article Matthew Syed outlines the human desire for energy and how we are depleting it. And leaders are oblivious to what is happening around them.

Most importantly, he points out how this desire for energy is fuelling the war in Ukraine. As he succinctly points out, Putin, once he had secured gas inroads to China, turned west and set his military machine against Ukraine. Ostensibly it was to bring Ukraine back into the fold of Russia. Realistically it is about gaining access to the vast energy resources that Ukraine holds.
And while he does that, Western leaders are full of rhetoric about what should happen, but very slow to put any meaningful action into place. Those leaders who talk, should actually ‘do the do’, and only those who ‘do,’ should be allowed to talk.
It seems the politicians are incapable of seeing the big picture, and if they do, more incapable of doing something meaningful.
